At TwitchCon in San Franciso, 60 competitors clashed in the first major H1Z1 tournament, vying for serious cash prizes. The event was hosted by former H1Z1 Senior Game Designer Jimmy Whisenhunt, along with professional e-sports commentators Leigh Smith and Alex Mendez. With over $170,000 on the line, the competition was expected to be fierce. The event did not disappoint. About 2,000 TwitchCon attendees were crammed into the Kappa theater for the event and over 130,000 viewers watched live on Twitch.
The invitational consisted of two Battle Royale matches, with the top 10 players from each round taking home cash prizes. Round 1 started with an upset as GiantWaffle took out fan favorite Sodapoppin during the initial rush for weapons. Shortly afterwards, Summit1g was carjacked by Ninja, eliminating two popular streamers within the first minute of the match. About a quarter of the way through the match, Grimmmz burned a naked Witwix to death with a Molotov cocktail.
As the gas pushed everyone toward the radio tower in the center of the map, EatMyDiction ran into Lirik and dispatched him before bleeding out himself. OpSCT, arguably the best H1Z1 Battle Royale player, was killed by SxyHxy as the match moved into the top twenty. The gas continued to drive players down the mountain into an open meadow.
Coming in at #11 was Sacriel, who was run over by CDNThe3rd’s jeep. CurvyLlama fell at #9 to SxyHxy, and the match started to heat up with the gas driving all the players together. Trick2g caught TimTheTatMan in the open and made short work of him. CDNThe3rd attempted a drive-by on SxyHxy which nearly went wrong.
Ninja dropped CDNThe3rd with an excellent long-range AR15 shot, causing StickyRice1 to break out in dance for making the top three. StickyRice1 had qualified for a slot in the tournament shortly before the event. StickyRice1 fell at the hands of Trick2g after a failed drive-by attempt by Ninja. This left Trick2g out in the open and Ninja still had a jeep. Ninja used his jeep for cover as he engaged Trick2g. The first round of the Invitational ended with Trick2g pushing up daisies.
Round 2 opened up with StickyRice1 going down to Di3sel in the first seconds of the match. AnneMunition dropped Road to TwitchCon contest winner Chef Gobe. CohhCarnage beat GiantWaffle to death with his fists. SeriousVic and LegendaryLea danced around a house exchanging bullets ending with Lea face down in the dirt.
Sodapoppin got off to a better start in this match but an attempted drive-by on Sacriel ended badly for him. Ninja went hyper-aggressive with a drive-by against Trick2g but Trick2g managed to pull off the kill. CDNThe3rd was taken down by Exec and the match moved into the top 40. SeriousAlan had the high ground and tried to take out Summit1g but Summit turned and dispatched him while he was reloading.
As the second gas wave was starting, PsiSyndicate pulled off an amazing defensive shot thwarting a kill attempt by SxyHxy. CohhCarnage setup an ambush in a trailer but was overwhelmed by JoshOG’s shotgun. CurvyLlama engaged Jericho from the high ground but he was able to bounce a grenade behind her tree. Lirik managed to get his first kill of the day against SeriousVic and the game moved to the top 20. That was also his last kill of the day as Summit1g took him out shortly after.
Road to TwitchCon winner Schmoogoogle was killed in 11th place by GrimmyBears, who then went on to kill Summit1g. Another Road to TwitchCon winner, SoliDfps, got in a fierce battle with OpSCT. Their fight took them through the trees and playing the angles of fire. SoliDfps eventually came out on top.
It was then down SoliDfsp, JoshOG, and Grimmmz jostling to flank each other. When SoliDfps made a move on Grimmmz, JoshOG took his cue to take down SoliDfps. This proved advantageous for Grimmmz, who emerged victorious after a well-placed shotgun blast.
Daybreak and Twitch did a great job organizing this event. The in-game camera work and commentary really made the matches exciting, and the Invitational matches are well worth a watch. TMC congratulates all the winners.
