On January 29, Reddit-user Feawen announced to the EVE Online community that his friend, Mythradites, would be sacrificing an officer module-fit Aeon in the Stain system of NRT4-U. His goal in sacrificing the 45B ISK ship was to raise awareness for veteran suicides.
“My bud Mythradites is currently sacrificing an Officer fit Aeon in Stain, in NRT4-U
He’s raising awareness for Veteran Suicides. 22 a day is 22 too many.[22:59:59] Mythradites > 22 Veterans kill themselves a day in the United States. That is one Veteran every 65 minutes. In the time that I have been de-cloaked a veteran somewhere in the US took their own life. Please reach out to them. Please come out and support the cause and the event, if you have time
As the event was announced quite late, only 174 pilots were able to actually reach the Aeon and get on the kill. The largest turnout was from Northern Coalition. There were many alliances and corporations on the kill to include Hax, Lazerhawks, Hole Control, PL, INFAMOUS, TISHU, and RZR.
Alphaempire, also on reddit, stated “Thank you Mythradites for raising awareness. Spectre Fleet, NC Dot, Hax, SLYCE, and others put the word out as much as possible. There are definitely far too many suicides coming from our heroes. Thanks for the Aeon km and campaign.”
Also raising awareness was Yoloswagtron. He ran a 24-hour event and announced it in a Reddit post as well, raising a total of nearly $2,800 for suicide awareness.
In his announcement he stated:
“Most of the day will be solo and small gang stuff with some famous people in EVE. I’m also doing two special events:
At 21:00 UTC/ EVE, I’ll be running an NPSI Drake fleet to finally take the star system VFK from the Goons (grr, goons). Your ship is free, so come along!
Please tune in! Even if you can’t donate anything, just come hang out in chat or pew pew with me! You can hit me up on twitter, tweetfleet slack, or twitch chat/PM all day.”
Suicide, whether veteran or not, is nothing to joke about. Any attempt to raise awareness, ingame and out, is an amazing thing. If you know of anyone in need, help him or her out. If you are hurting, a lot of us feel the same pain. Speak up and broadcast for reps!
Editor’s note: A fleet run by broadcast4reps to raise awareness ran last week, which TMC reported on.
