Breaking News: CCP Announce Alliance Tournament XVII

At 1500 UTC today (July 14, 2021), CCP dropped an announcement in a video posted to the EVE Online YouTube channel.

Prior to going live, the YouTube trailer had been subject to a timed “premiere” countdown of 24 hours, fuelling speculation across the EVE community. Potential topics under discussion ranged from a new Quadrant update to ESS Reserve Bank keys being released, or potentially the end of the current “Scarcity” era of CCP’s resource plans. There was even (among the community of tournament enthusiasts) discussion of a new Alliance Tournament, which was placed on hiatus in early 2019.

In actual fact, the YouTube trailer began cryptically, making references to “battles fought among blood-stained stars” and “tattered flags once proudly carried”, upon a backdrop of wrecked hulls. This was followed by a statement that “there is blood yet to be shed, and flags yet to burn”, leading this author to believe for a moment that this would be a new Sovereignty system announcement.

Instead, it was the long-hoped for, long-awaited announcement that the Alliance Tournament would be returning to our Twitch screens come November 2021. According to CCP Aurora on Discord, there will be further news coming on this later today via dev-blog.

INN will, of course, bring you that update as it appears, as well as further news on the Alliance Tournament XVII in the coming months.

I can’t wait for the spectacle of watching Hydra Reloaded sweep the podium with their own sock-puppet alliances. I mean, Vydra Relolded couldn’t possibly be the same people as Hydra Reloaded. Maybe they’ll roll out “Glydra Cuckolded” next.

I’m really excited about the return of the AT, I’ve always seen it as the Eve equivalent of the Olympics.

Maybe before alliances started rigging it, now it’s just another joke for players to game for trillion isk each assets.

… and that doesn’t happen in the Olympics? I made the comparison with my eyes wide open. I love the whole thing, drama included.

Well now we know why PanDaFam wanted the summer off. They have an AT to now try and rig.

It looked to me like one of the main functions of the video was to highlight the new art improvement. Richer deeper colours etc… If you watch the video they even use a trick to try and highlight the new art. Starts off with a bit of dead stuff, then some ships fighting in black and white AND then it flicks into colour with the new art stuff. The whole point of the black and white section is to make the colour contrast stand out even more when they flick over to it. This may have a small annoucement in it, but it’s a lot more advert than it is annoucement. Expect to see a lot more of this trick – old black and white versus new fancy colour. It’s like a before and after advert for new and improved washing powder…..

this just reeks of desperation, why else announce this during a decade long low point in subscription numbers? “Please, PLEASE come back, pleads CCP, we’ll give back the AT if you do….” Sorry too late, you keep shitting up the game with bad design choices and stupid development changes.

How long before a major Eve streamer starts streaming Final Fantasy 14? 🙂 Would be a great way to protest.

lol “major eve streamer” that makes it sound like such a thing exists, eve is such a niche game even the best eve streamers can’t be called major by any stretch of the term.

AT would maybe be fun to watch if everyone was on an even playing field and any ol alliance could enter and win using pure skill and tactics. Unfortunately competition ships aren’t limited to T1 modules so only a group that can afford to buy several sets of the best implants and modules for each of their pilots have a chance at winning. So half the matches are fairly easy to call and the other half are suspect because collusion is rampent. At least double the number of teams, make everyone use T1 or T2 with no implants, give everyone max skills while they’re on the tournament server, and actually put effort into stopping collusion. Then AT could be fun to watch. Actual skill is what people want to see.

Ah yes. The Alliance Tournament. Where the rich alliances can bankroll the best clones and ships to easily beat the not filthy rich groups while trying to out fix the fights against other flithy rich groups. Make everything T1 or T2, no implants, and actually try and put a stop to collusion then maybe it’ll be a bit entertaining.
