CCP Guard, unquestionably one of the most visible faces of EVE Online, announced today he is leaving CCP Games to pursue a new career outside the gaming industry. His announcement, titled Thank You for Everything, appeared on the on the official EVE Online forums today.
This will undoubtedly fuel the ever-present undercurrent of predictions that “EVE is Dying”. In the announcement, Guard makes clear there is nothing amiss, and that he is leaving the comfort of CCP to find out how he can continue growing what he can do. The post was fashioned with great emphasis that this was purely a career decision by CCP Guard.
Losing someone this influential to the EVE community will be a challenge for CCP Games. CCP Guard was a very likable person, with a personality that makes others happy. His excitement for the game was infectious, and he has pushed the game forward in a way few others could.
As a member of Permaband, he brought us some catchy tunes like HTFU, Warp to the Dance Floor, Killing is Just a Means, and more. CCP Guard and Permaband was one of a number of little things at CCP Games that make EVE Online a little more unique than other games on the market.
Soon after the post went live, comments began pouring in. They overwhelmingly thank CCP Guard for his work. Many players, from CSM members and names you know to those who enjoy the game without huge recognition, are all wishing him success and thanking him for what he has done for the game.
One thing is for sure; EVE will be different without CCP Guard. EVE Online has lost not just an employee, but someone who deeply cared for the game and the players who lived in this virtual world we call New Eden. Let us all hope he enjoys his promotion to EVE Online Player.
Fly Safe, CCP Guard.
