Devblog: New Alpha Clone Rules Released

Earlier Team Size Matters dropped the details on the proposed new alpaca capabilities and limitations. While far from the biggest item put out at Eve Vegas, the updated Alpha did cause a bit of a stir by giving them far greater potential to fly doctrine ships of the line.

The Numbers

Alpha clones will now be able to have access to far more skills than was previously allowed. The total skill package is now 20,443,989 skill points worth of available skills. This includes access to T2 small and medium weapons (and the specializations skills that go with them), Battle ship and Battle cruiser hulls. And finally, now Alphas wont be constrained to ONLY the race they choose at character creation.

Obviously, and the first point of contention, this allows Alpha clones to fly not only faction battleships but pirate ships off all sizes. Yes readers, alpha clone Mach fleets may soon be a viable thing. Now a grain of salt to go with that, this theoretical alpha bs fleet’s bite is also going to be somewhat reduced without the T2 large weapon systems to go with it.

The Controversy

While yes, having broader access by F2P players is a bit of a stir, it isn’t really THAT big of a deal. The issue is that those free players can’t just TRAIN those skills. After 5 mil skill points the queue stops all together (as it does in the current model). So the only way to GET those extra skill points is to either inject them or to buy omega for long enough to train them all and then let it lapse. Some players seem suspicious that this may be ‘a cash grab’, but CCP’s interest in microtransactions is well-established, and diversifying off of the subscription model is clearly a priority.

Another odd and interesting observation that has been made is that for an expansion dedicated to mining, those opportunities have been largely with held from alphas. While they can fit a venture, there is no opportunity to move into barges or other craft to make mining viable even in the limited sense of the word. Ice mining lasers in particular are completely precluded as there isn’t any hull an alpha can fly that is allowed to fit them. And yet, ICE HARVESTING is one of the allowed skills in the expanded list. Perhaps there will be a change to make the humble venture an ice harvester in the future.

I am quite happy to learn of the release of “alpaca capabilities and limitations.”

May their woolly warmth soften the chill of New Eden.

Only question: are alpacas playable clones, or capsuleer accessories/pets? NEED to bee playable race.

I think this was a tongue in cheek reference to bar talk shortly after in Vagas. The notion being to spin up and inject disposable Talos fleets pre-staged to reinforce citadels when a rival goes on deployment.

The concept’s been rehashed a number of times with different ships. Taloses, Feroxes, Hurricanes, Machariels, Megathrons…

pre-staging fleets means being able to pre-stage all elements of the fleet, and pre-stage fleets in enough places to not be predictable. And there, the scale of the thing works against the idea. Not saying it’s impossible, just… it’s not as much of a done deal as some people think.

So essentially this will be like those people who enthused about ninja-mining blasted moon fracks in Prospects. Sounds cool until you try doing it and realize what the drawbacks are.

And then you are either burning your alpha around, or you had to train a bunch of alphas for each location. It’s just not practical.

You may wish to look at that statement about T2 tank again.

Yeah, should be ‘fully T2’, and that doesn’t apply to armor, since they can do T2 plates but not extenders. Will fix, thanks.

T2 Invulns but not the extenders… I wonder if that was on purpose? Maybe it’s an oversight like the ice mining?

Edit: Large T2 extenders only need Shield Upgrades 4, which is going to be possible.

I _think_ (I’ve not checked) the only T2 shield module they can’t fit are XL SBs.

That is correct, but those are hard to fit anyways on most of the ships available to alphas, especially with their fitting skills.

It’s not a bad model from a business perspective. Why would CCP put mining out the F2P crowd when it’s so easy to multibox.

      You can’t multibox alphas

What exactly prevents someone from having multiple computers, all running a separate alpha account?

        November 3, 2017 at 4:49 PM
        • Lekly phuzz

That’s not really multiboxing… And the limit then is the number of computers you can afford.

Honestly, if you are going to own enough computers to make Venture mining with alphas really profitable, you deserve an award.

I don’t have even a second character, but I’m sure it would be fun to manage 20 accounts on 20 PCs at the same time

Right, why pay $300 to get 10 accounts up to speed to PLEX themselves when you can pay twice that per account not including electrical bills and cooling!
